Indian participation in Science and Technology in Society (STS)


The Science and Technology in Society Forum (STS Forum) is a not-for-profit organization founded in 2004. It provides a framework for open discussions regarding further progress of science and technology for the benefit of humankind and embodies the spirit of managing the lights and shadows of Science and Technology.


The STS Forum annual meetings, attended by different stakeholders from nearly 100 countries-regions-international organizations- is inaugurated by Japanese Prime Minister and concludes with a statement. An S&T Ministers Round Table is organized during the Forum. The Forum deliberations provide useful linkages with other global platforms such as WEF, WSF, (TWAS), G8, G20, OECD.


The past STS forum have deliberated on the subjects of energy, climate change, environment and natural disasters, global health, ICT for human welfare, food security, education and have resulted in recommendations and leads.


India has been engaged in the STS Forum at Ministerial/ Secretary level. BIRAC, TIFAC Escorts Ltd, Indosolar Ltd, Reliance Industries Ltd and TCS are contributors to STC Forum from India.


The STS Forum has started organizing thematic workshops in different countries. The Forum organized two Workshops on the themes of India-Japan Cooperation in Smart Cities in June 2016 and Cooperation on Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology between India and Japan in Feb 2017 in New Delhi.
